Jugend – Nr. 24 1920 – Georg Hirth

March 2, 2012

Jugend

 Nr. 24 –  June 1920

Jugend was a cultural weekly publication. It soon became a style-setting icon that launched the German art nouveau movement.

Georg Hirth started the magazine, and for twenty years until his death was firmly in control of its editorial content. He was a remarkable man. His home, which today is the French Embassy in Munich, was filled with writers, poets, and artists who were interested in the arts and crafts movement in Germany. They were captivated by the idea of breaking into a new philosophy, a new way of seeing art, and Jugend gave them a place to explore these ideas.

In Jugend, the fusion of a font style with an image style as a style hallmark of a publication was used brilliantly. Their methods still influence advertising and publication art throughout the world.

Today, Hirth is remembered in the name of a Munich plaza, Georg-Hirth-Platz, and through the legacy of Jugend. Tragically, his place in the world’s memory, like that of many other Germans of his time, has been mostly obscured by the long dark shadow of Nazism that followed.

  1. Hi — Do you know the artist on this cover? Thanks.

    • Oddly, It is the only piece of printed art in this issue I can’t seem to find artist information on. The brief issue information on the last page offers no identification. All other art pieces in this issue have the artist printed directly with the image. It’s unfortunate because it is an incredible piece of art and have personally tried to find artist information.

  2. Oh — oops, sorry. I figured out how to figure it out. It took having to learn how to read old German… but… what I found was that the 2nd page of the whole volume has a list, by issue number, of the cover artists. That one is by Carl O. Petersen. (don’t know if this will work: http://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/jugend1920_1/0002/image?sid=f127d50a3615d6d29e8425cb76f6d391 ). I’ve been able to dig up a fair amount of stuff on him, including a book of his with lots of storks and flamingos in it for sale online for about $12.

    • Interesting! I did a quick search of Carl O. Petersen and found another issue of Jugend (1922) on the internet with his work on the cover. Different print but same style and colors used. His work is breathtaking and wish I could find more of his things. I’ll have to search for the book of storks and flamingos you mentioned.
